Project Toby: The One Realistic Rig

$15

I'll probably add more words for this product later, as is fitting for a larger audience. But as for now, if you come from my Youtube channel and/or my Discord server, and you know the stuff I create, I'll let Toby speaks for herself.

Here's all the videos during the development that I've created so far.

  1. One-Click Posing Solution
  2. FK/IK Switch
  3. The Power of Animation
  4. The Symphony of Shapekeys

Inside, there is the original file of the Project Toby that I've used so far, and will continue using. So you will get everything you have seen from the videos and other stuff I've used as well. It will also be updated as I update Toby along the way.

If you're in need of getting a 3D model that just works like what you'd expect from a human body, then this is just for you.

I don't have to tell what you can do with the Toby rig, you can let your imagination run wild with it. For me, I heavily use it as a base model for cloth making, and later on I use it for simulating more of a dynamic presentation of the cloth in various poses. Also, I use it simply as a reference, because sometimes photographs reference are tricky to decipher.

It Starts With A Good Topology

(Updated 12/01/24)

Every great thing in the world starts with good building block, for such greatness will not come to thing that is not good. I know that sounds like something Peter Dinklage's Tyrion Lannister would say, but it's true.

In this case, the key difference that separates a realistic rig and the one realistic rig is its 3D model's good topology. Good topology allows up to do more with less.

Imperfectly Perfect Idealized Proportion

(Updated 17/01/24)

I came from the old world. By that, I mean that I come from a very traditional art background. I didn't use computer to do my art until very very recently.

So very much unlike my 3D peers and colleagues out there, I still follow and admire the art traditions that have been passed down through generations to this very day.

One of which is human proportion. I inherit it from the old man Leonardo, which in turn, he himself inherited from the old(er) man Vitruvius.

Though, unlike them, I live in more modern time, and I do celebrate imperfections of human body. The proportion is not as neat and rigid like it once were, but it still represents, in good nature, an idealized human proportion.

This time-tested proportion prevents me (and I hope it will do as such to you) from going astray too far, and falling down to the fallacy of stylization as a base to depict a human form in my art. It doesn't have a set of large eyes, a huge head, small torso, long legs, and small feet and hands. Every part is just in a good average of what you'd find from day-to-day people.
